How does this medication work?

Globally branded as Valium, Diazepam belongs to the class of medication called benzodiazepines which is usually used to treat short term relief of symptoms of mild or moderate anxiety or alcohol withdrawals. It is very much effective in treating agitation and in reduction of the muscle spasms. It works by targeting the central nervous system by slowing down the nerves of the brain hence causing relaxation from anxiety and muscular spasms.

How should I use this medication?

The dosage in adults range from 2 mg to 10 mg to be taken 2-4 times in a day. For children older than 6 months the initial dose starts from 1 mg to 2.5 mg taken 3-4 times daily.

It is highly subjected to your response and thus individualized doses are provided to avoid the risk of excessive sedation or motor impairment. Doctors prescribed dosage should be taken self-prescribing the dose should be avoided. Diazepam is normally used for short periods of time, to reduce the risk of addiction or habbit-forming it is restricted to be taken for a long period of time. Who should NOT take this medication?

Do not take diazepam if you are/have

  • allergies to diazepam or any ingredients of the medication
  • allergic to any other benzodiazepines
  • acute narrow-angle glaucoma
  • liver disease dysfunction
  • myasthenia gravis
  • severe breathing problems
  • sleep apnea

This medication is prohibited to the infants under 6 months of age.

  • The medication may pass into the breast milk and thus should be avoided by breastfeeding mothers.
